Writing is indeed a form of communication. It is also a very historical way to pass along relevant data, cultural and religious customs, laws and probably most importantly communicate a piece of information to a mass audience. Your massive audience can be as simple as your social media presence or influence, regular posts, blogging or even a podcast. Whenever you are given the opportunity to communicate to a large general audience you should consider prewriting your ideas so as to promote confidence in speech, clarity, avoid misunderstandings and the spread of misinformation. Prewriting is nothing more that brainstorming on paper. It helps you as a great and free thinker actually understanding and reason with yourself, what you’re actually thinking.

Listing

Listing your ideas can assist in generating a lot of information within a short time frame. You may generate something broad then proceed to build associations with a lot more detail. Listing is especially effective in the event one’s starting topic is very broad and it needs a slight narrowing down. Create a rough draft of all the possible terms that emerge from the general topic you are working on. You should never have to worry about editing or throwing out any of your ideas. Simply write down as many possibilities as you can. The next step should be grouping the items that you have listed according to arrangements that make sense to you. Do some things seem to relate to each other? Give each group a label. This just a narrowed down your topic with possible points of development. The final step in listing should be the writing of your sentence centered on the label you created where grouped your ideas. Now you just created a topic sentence or possible thesis statement.

Clustering

Clustering, or idea mapping, is a strategy used to promote the exploration of the relationships between ideas.  You may begin this exercise by putting the subject in the center of a page. Circle or underline it. As you think of other ideas, write them on the page surrounding the central idea. Link the new ideas to the central circle with lines. As you think of ideas that relate to the new ideas, add to those in the same way. The result will look like a web on your page. Locate clusters of interest to you, and use the terms you attached to the key ideas as departure points for your paper. Clustering is especially useful in determining the relationship between ideas. You will be able to distinguish how the ideas fit together, especially where there is an abundance of ideas. Clustering your ideas lets you see them visually in a different way, so that you can more readily understand possible directions your paper may take.

It allow you to focus on a specific topic, while forcing you to write them so quickly, that you are unable to stray off subject and edit any of your ideas. Practice free writing on any general topic for five to ten minutes by writing consistently. Discipline yourself to continue writing even if nothing specific comes to mind. Even though you’re free writing technique is considered to be a just a rough draft, this style of writing is well known for generating ideas and that’s what’s important. No need to focus on grammar or spelling at this time. Upon completion of your free writing exercise, look a look back and analyze what you’ve written and highlight the most prominent and interesting ideas. Then you can begin all over again, with a tighter focus (see looping). You will narrow your topic and, in the process, you will generate several relevant points about the topic.

Looping

Looping is a type of free writing technique that allow you to narrow down your ideas even further, while committing to a specific topic. The results we are looking for from your previous free writing exercise would be the identification of a key thought and using that idea as your starting point. Loop your free writing for around 5-10 minutes so as develop a sequence of free writings, with one more specific than the last. The same rules that apply to free writing apply to looping.  Write quickly, do not edit, and do not stop. Loop your free writing as many times as necessary, circling each interesting idea, phrase, or sentence. When you have finished four or five rounds of looping, you would have accomplished on paper an analysis that indicates how you view feel and is thinking about a particular topic. You may even have the basis for a tentative thesis or an improved idea for an approach to your assignment when you have finished.
